XP Service Pack 3 released today

Download it from Window's Update. It should customize it based on how up to date your machine is with Windows Update.
It's mostly a cleanup and security patch, but I'd still recommend it. I haven't done it yet (as it came out after I went to bed this morning).

Did the upgrade and everything seems to be working fine (crosses fingers) no smoke and no smell of ozone.

I think I will wait a week or two...To see if the 'upgrade' has any bugs.
It is good to see that MS recognizes that a whole lot of ppl still use xp.

This is more of a security patch than anything, so it shouldn't cause any problems.

Yeah, from what I hear MS will be supporting XP into the 1st quarter of 2009, but XP will be
very
hard to find after June 30. A lot of PC's and notebooks are and more will be coming with what they call 'Upgrade when Ready'. The machine will have both XP and Vista on it and you can use XP until you are ready to move to Vista. But mostly they will be the 32-bit versions of XP and Vista and not the 64-bit.

I'm ok with holding out on Vista as long as possible.

I am a pc guy. Not the politically correct ones, the 'personal computer'. I will not use vista. (any1 remember windows ME?). Yeah. If there is not something out there that is better than xp (and don't say vista, lies do not become us) by that point, i will look into a mac.

I don't know that I'd go quite as far as you Drew but I will say that I don't particularly like vista. The whole asking permission thing, which so far as I know still can't be disabled, would drive me to destroy my pc. I'll stick with XP for the foreseeable future. As to SP 3 I'm not sure if I wanna download it or not. Knowing my luck, or lack thereof , I'd be the one in a million that has nothing but problems with it. Eventually once I work up the nerve I'll probly put it in, til then I say if it ain't broke don't fix it.

I am not saying that Vista is better than XP, but if you have enough RAM (at least 2 Gig) then I have been told that Vista runs just fine. And I have been told that it runs even better with a Dual Core or Quad Core processor, but if you are going to go that route, you had better have 4 Gig Ram.

The 'asking permission thing' as you put it can be turned off, but you have to get into the system BIOS to do it.

I am a believer of 'if it ain't broke, don't fix it.' I would need to upgrade my entire system to accomodate that much ram. As it is, my compy is over 4 years old..the ram i have is top for when i bought it. And as for vista running just fine, so does my xp.

Vista does fix some issues that XP couldn't, simply because of a complete rewrite.
People initialy said what you said about XP, and look now. Vista has some rough edges, but it also has some nice features (visible and behind the scenes), but SP1 made huge strides in fixing issues with Vista, and I'm fairly sure they'll address any other lingering, pressing issues.
Part of the problem with Vista is actualy from the Hardware manufacturers for failing to make drivers that function properly. That's not Microsoft's fault, particularly since they've not had over a year post release, and over 6 months pre-release.

Yea about those drivers... Nvidia is having serious issues with making drivers for vista. I can't go more then a day without tripping over issues having to do with incompatibility between graphics card drivers and vista. That issue is even worse for the fools who run 64 bit vista.

Yeah, that's something that apparently ATI has actualy done well with (and they aren't known for good drivers).
Creative is another bad one. Some guy made some nice creative drivers, and instead of trying to learn from him, creative simply sued him.

I have automatic updates on my PC, so I very well may have downloaded and installed it without noticing.

No, you need to manualy download it. I did the Network version, but I have 3 PCs here to install it on (still have to put it on the wife's). Chances are, you have most of the changes already though, it's mostly a patch package.
