Watchmen, one of the most anticipated movies of next year, is up against a villain no super hero has been able to defeat; litigation.

On Friday, U.S. District Court Judge Gary Allen Feess, denied Warner Brothers motion for a dismissal of a lawsuit filed by 20th Century Fox, claiming Fox owned the exclusive rights to a Watchmen movie.

The basis of the lawsuit is Fox claims it acquired all movie rights to the graphic novel between 1986 and 1990. In 1991, Fox transferred some rights to producer Larry Gordon. Part of the agreement between Fox and Gordon was the option to shop distribution rights to other studios. If a studio were interested, Gordon would buy out Fox’s remaining rights to the film. Fox claims that Warner Brothers or Gordon has paid them for the rights. To make matters worse, according to Variety, Fox isn’t just looking for monetary compensation but to prevent Warner Brothers from ever releasing the movie. A crime to those eagerly awaiting the movie’s release on March 6, 2009.

What I want to know is why this problem wasn’t taken care of before production began? One would think with all the lawyers Warner Brothers has, anything relating to copyright would be an automatic red flag. Secondly, why didn’t Larry Gordon buy out the rest of the rights? The amount the movie is projected to gross is sure to offset the cost of buying the rights. And with the graphic novel being the second biggest seller on Amazon due to the trailer, those earnings will be quite a pretty penny. As for Fox, why are you trying to prevent the movie from being released? You’ll lose any compensation is due to you. Could it a case of arrogance, or intention to sabotage Warner Brothers? I don’t know. All I know is I’m eagerly awaiting this movie and if a bunch of lawyers prevent me from seeing it…lets just say I’ll be really pissed. In other words, SETTLE! For everyone’s benefit.

Rupert Murdoch should die with a Tickle-me-Elmo shoved down his throat...for many reasons....this is just one more.

I can't help but think that graphic novel author Allen Moore would love it if this movie NEVER made it to the big screen. He was against anyone who put any of his work on the big screen like V FOR VENDETTA and THE LEAGUE OF EXTRAORDINARY GENTLEMEN.

Actualy, he simply divorces himself from it.  He doesn't care.

Did they come to a settlement?  Last I heard the March 6th date was in jeopardy.

I found this today...
Quote
The project returned to Warner Bros., where Snyder was hired to direct (Paramount remained as international distributor). Fox sued Warner Bros. for copyright violation arising from Gordon's failure to pay a buy-out in 1991, which enabled him to develop the film at the other studios. Fox and Warner Bros. settled this before the film's release and Fox will receive a portion of the gross.

and this...
Quote
On January 15, 2009, Hollywood Reporter has reported that Fox and WB have reached a settlement. [107] Fox will receive a settlement and a share of box office, but no future ownership: The official statement reads "Warner Bros. and Twentieth Century Fox have resolved their dispute regarding the rights to the upcoming motion picture Watchmen in a confidential settlement. Warner Bros acknowledges that Fox acted in good faith in bringing its claims, which were asserted prior to the start of principal photography. Fox acknowledges that Warner Bros. acted in good faith in defending against those claims Warner Bros. and Fox, like all Watchmen fans, look forward with great anticipation to this film's March 6 release in theatres." [108] According to G4TV the settlement will give Fox 8.5% of the box office receipts and reimbursement for development and legal costs incurred by the studio.

It was true to the graphic novel.

I really was put off by the dudeity if Dr> Manhattan and seeing a compound fracture made.  The rest was all right

I was also told by someone who has seen the movie that the sex scene between two heroes and the rape scene are particularly graphic. So much so that he had a very difficult time enjoying the movie and he almost walked out of the movie.

The movie itself is kind of graphic in general.  There were a few times the violence was a little extreme to me.  I still enjoyed the movie as it's a great story.  The R rating is well deserved, some things are exaggerated just like they would be in a comic book.

Sorry for being kind of disjointed there.  Writing stream of though.

Having read this thread I had severe reservations about this movie.  As I firmly believe that there is nothing entertaining in rape for it to EVER need be shown in film or any other media.  So let me say I'm glad I saw the movie for myself, for there was no rape scene.  The guy never even got his pants off before two other superheroes came in and gave the guy a well deserved smack down.  So you were misinformed on that point.  It definately had a sex scene and some nudidy and dudity, but the prison scenes with Rorscach made the whole movie worth it, if you can overlook the underlying political soapbox preaching, which kinda reminded me of Starship Troopers.
If you can get past its faults, the rest of the movie was great!  IMO

I think the scene qualifies as sexual assault.  Not really sure.  Otherwise it's just assault.  The prison scene is pretty awesome.

It would be sexual assault, but it was a point in the book and in the movie about how flawed the Comedian and many of the other "heroes" were.

I believe that's a change from in the comic, though the comic is less graphic about what actually happened, and it has been a year or two.

I rented Watchmen and watched it last night and I have to say that while it was fun, I was less than impressed overall. The ending particularly seemed, well, like 'is that all?'

I'd like to see the extended cut.  If it ever comes out and includes the Pirates of the Black Freighter in the set, I'll probably just buy it.

I recently read on Eclipse Magazine's website that a Director's Cut DVD was released with 20+ scenes added but it didn't include the Pirates of the Black Freighter. In the near future they are going to release an Ultimate Watchmen edition which may (or may not) include said pirates. We shall have to wait and see.
