So is the only thing going on on the 31st just the celebration, or will there be gaming events that night also?

Not sure but I would think that the only official thing going on would be the New Years celebration.

Hi everyone,
I would also like everyone to go to the Vernecon site as well, but to take the poll that Verne put up by my request. I had suggested that a social event, rather than a gaming one, be on the opening night of Vernecon, and he put the poll up asking if people would be interested in that, and if so, what kinds of things they might enjoy doing.
The reason I asked him to do this is because there are some of us/you that have been going for a long time to cons with each other, and we can sometimes forget what it is like to be new to gaming groups. I thought a social event would be a low pressure way for new people that might show up to get to know everyone else that they might not otherwise get to know during the next several days, or, to get to know someone, so that when they sit at a table together they might already know each other a little better. I find that out of character relationships can enrich the in-character dynamics, don't you?
Another reason for my request is so that IL people, if we are going to VerneCon, can meet some of the out-of-towners that we have been "talking to" in the forums face to face, again on a social level, since you might not play the same game as someone else, and it might be your only chance to really converse. I for one feel as if I am getting to know some people better via these forums, and it would be nice to put faces to those people!
So, please take the poll. The sooner the better!
Thanks
Ashley

The April game day in NC has a BBQ at Rel's house every year. I know some of you don't know him but that's not important even though he would say it is.
They get together the night before and have a great time hanging out. Folks traveled from across the country last year to be there.

we also went out to eat the next night. There were about 50 or so people at a really long table.
I'm all for social events if time allows. Some gamers aren't very social but some are. This is a great way to get to know each other before sitting down to the table to play. I met some great people that I knew online only for the first time there.

I am looking into what we need to do to 'sponsor' someone and I will get back to when I have an answer, but sponsoring you will not be a problem.

That is because this is Verne's con, that started once upon a time as a small home campaign! I think there are plenty of people here that can vouch for you. Have you not been to Vernecon in the past? Drew thought he met you before.

Are you going to be at VerneCon? Have you been before? You may need to also get sponsored. I'm sure Scott will have that info for us soon.

Crispen, you have been sponsored...
I have been told that sponsoring someone is as easy as sending an e-mail to the Staff with the name of the person you want to sponsor and a general reason (cool gamer, helps with events) and the administrator will allow for the person to register, but give the admin 24 to 36 hours as he is very busy.

I'd sponser you Aeson, but it's a bit of a treck from Atlanta to here.
My general problem with Verncon this year is I won't know if I can go till likely 2 weeks before hand. I've also never been a fan of the New Years date, as that keeps me away from family.

I would like to. I don't think I can this time. I just started a new job. I have too much going on to think about trips right now. I really would like to. I mainly chimed in to support your social event idea.

If it winds up being a social event, would Dawn not come with you to celebrate? You could get a sitter for Serenity. We are getting a sitter for Nathan (if we can).

Ah - I forgot you were from Atlanta. I got the impression from previous posts that you and Bront worked together, so I assumed you were more local, but now I remember a post in which you mentioned GA. Congrats on the new job.

Drew did, it was a GenCon a few years back, in Vern's campaign. John (another michigan gamer) and I were Brisk and EthelWolf. I would make lipton jokes about him and he called me Ethel. We playfully bickered alot, then would jump into peril.

As my character was not nearly as cool as yours, the type of peril I was jumping into was more of the mortal variety. But hey, whats an adventure if there isn't the chance of failure?

They had a party 1 year, she was down there for it. She was extremely unimpressed. It went poorly, no one really did anything she's not much of a dancer, and people still chose to game over party.
It's just not a big party crowd, it's a gamer crowd.

When we game tonight, I'll bring it up. I don't think the crew will, but I'm hoping to convince a couple to go. The holiday makes it tricky, no one wants to commit, because they are not sure what family obligations will fall on them. Even I have some reservations, and visions of frying pans bonging me on the head if my wife desides some family thing trumps gaming. Sometimes it's like she doesn't even know me any more.
