Is it worth it? Are any of the + Certs worth it? I have a book I'm reading to prepare for the test but not making much headway. I'm thinking of signing up for a prep course online through Continuing Ed.

Yeah, it's worth it.  If you are going into desktop support or something similar.  I know places that wont hire unless you have A+ cert.  I think it's dumb, but they are the ones hiring so they get to make the rules.

The A+ does teach you some things that you don't learn from working in the field sometimes.  I have some software that I have been using to keep up with it.

I was a bit surprised that I failed some of the practice tests I've taken online. I know how computers work and I know how to take them apart and put them back together but I guess I don't know all the fine points.

I would like to go into a desktop support job one day. I could use it as a way up in my current job.

A+ has quite a few things in it.

I got the training in college, but worked for 4 years (yes, on hardware) before I took the test.  I had trouble on some of the newer parts, particularly anything involving wireless networking, since that didn't exist in 2001.

Fortunately, you can learn things by taking the practice test over and over again.  I know a few people that got several Certs that way.

Despite having an A+ cert, I've never found much use for what I learned there.  I knew what I needed before hand, and I already had 8 years of experience with hardware when I got it.  However, if you don't, and are just getting into the industry, It's quite valuable.
