Has anyone tried it out yet? Do you plan to? What is your opinion.
I have the beta test book. I like it and I like some of the changes. I heard a rumor they plan to change the HP back to what it is in D&D i.e. wizards go back to d4 hp instead of d6.

I'll stick with either 3.5 or go 4.0. Pathfinder strikes me as the worst of both worlds unfortunately.

Why do you say that?
There are some new feats to playtest.

4.0 seems a bit cleaner to play and create characters with, 3.5 had it's own charm. Pathfinder ramped up the power a bit in 3.5, and just doesn't seem right to me. To me, it didn't fix what I felt needed fixing in 3.5, and introduced a few of the problems I thought 4.0 introduced.

I can understand that. I like some of the changes with Pathfinder but unless I can find some players I'll probably stick with 3.5. 4th doesn't do it for me.

I think I would like 4E, but I'm having enough trouble finding players who play D&D, let alone what version.

My D&D group will be trying it out probably after the first of the year. I've been very reluctent. the others bought the PHB for me for my birthday so I wouldn't have to. I've skimmed through it but that's about it. The most positive thing I could some up with was that it had really pretty pictures.

I've heard it plays better than it reads, which excites me because I like how it reads.

4th took a lot of the clunky rules and smoothed them out. They also made it that the cleric isn't just the party healing battery. They still do that but they get to fight too.

Working on reading the book c2c, my biggest concern is that 90% of the abilities that the different classes have revolve around combat.

I think it's designed to be a combat focused game. Some of the wizards more mundane spells were turned into rituals as an example.

And I know that most of my gaming brethren enjoys the combat aspect of role playing games. I just happen to be an oddball.
Now I know. And knowing is 1/2 the battle.
You know what the other half is?
violence!

I just posted a GI Joe related post. That's funny.
I like combat as much as the next guy but I like an RPG with a fair amount of role playing and story.

You mean Castles and Crusaders?
I played that once, never gain. Absolutely hated it. It felt like playing D&D on the short bus. The numbers looked similar, but nothing worked the way it was supposed to, nor was it interesting.

Nope, meant 4e. And yes, there are rituals. And yes, the role playing truly originates from the player, not the character. I know all this.

Ahh, cover to cover. I thought c2c was the system. Trickse Texting.
Most of the reason the powers I think revolve around combat as that's the big balancing factor for a class. The 3.0/3.5 Bard was balanced as having a lot of non-combat usefulness, but it ended up not working too well.
I'm more irked about the races than the system itself with 4E. The game itself looks interesting, and from what I've been told, combat is a lot more active while running quicker and game prep time is significantly easier.
But built to offer extreme political intrigue it's not. It's more built to be similar to older D&D versions in a throwback dungeon crawl kinda way.

That is what I am lead to believe as well. Combat does run faster, and keeping track of conditions, and what those conditions do, seems to be smoother. As one of the reviews i have read said, 'it is WoW meets tabletop.'
