This article must assume complete Bible illiteracy, I'm curious if anyone thinks she makes a single Biblical reference that is correctly in context.

http://www.newsweek.com/id/172653

For those that don't want to read that much.

Does anyone believe that Abraham's child with Hagar is an example of a Bible endorsement of polygamy?

Does anyone believe "while the Bible and Jesus say many important things about love and family, neither explicitly defines marriage as between one man and one woman."

Does anyone believe in "the general conviction that the Bible is bent toward inclusiveness."

Does anyone believe "We want, as Jesus taught, to love one another for our own good—and, not to be too grandiose about it, for the good of the world."

Does anyone agree with, "no sensible modern person wants marriage—theirs or anyone else's —to look in its particulars anything like what the Bible describes. "

Lets take the bible out of the arguement. Take religion out for just a moment. Now answer the question.

Why shouldn't gay couples marry?

Take the Bible out and what is this word "marry"?  If you mean why can't gay couples enter a contract establishing obligations to each other they already can.

But that is not really the point of this thread.  The point of the thread is, have we really come to the point where Lisa Miller can pretend to quote the Bible and people believe it?  As a culture have we become ignorant of fundamental literature?

They don't want just a contract. They want to be able to be married just like hetero couples.

Do you mean the Christian culture or the American culture? Those should be 2 different things. American culture is made up of all different religions and cultures. Why would non-Christian Americans care if she misquotes the bible?

I think it goes back to something I said before. Some people through forethought or ignorance will misquote the bible to meet their own needs. I'm not sure which is the case here.

I started a new thread for this, I hope, interesting discussion.

The bible is essential literature for any American, Christian or not.  One cannot understand our history without it.   In this sense, it is bible with a little b, people need to know what is written in that piece of litterature, it is foundational to the American culture.

I think it goes back to something I said before. Some people through forethought or ignorance will misquote the bible to meet their own needs. I'm not sure which is the case here.
Certainly, but the inoculation to that is being well read, then lies through forethought or ignorance are of little import as people will know them as lies.   Did you note Drew's response?  Newsweek wouldn't publish that trash if people where as well read as he is.

Why would non-Christian Americans care if she misquotes the bible?

Everyone should care if someone is spouting something from a source as fact, when indeed it is not. It would be the same as someone "misquoting" some other person on purpose. We should all want to hear and know the truth of what is being told to us. Just because the folks that "wrote" the bible aren't around anymore to tell her she is misquoting what they wrote doesn't make it any less important that their words are being misquoted.

And I would like to think that there might be some non-Christian Americans that, if they did hear the truth of the Bible, and not the butchered version some people throw out there, that their lives would be changed by the truth of it.
