I'm curious.  Who out there already has or is planning on getting an HDTV soon (IE, before February 18th)?  Or even the digital tuners or TVs that can use them?

I'm waiting for my government coupon.  I was wait listed, but it sounds like the stimulas package should fix that.

Question:

I thought normal TVs that don't use an antenna will continue working. We don't have an HDTV, but it is only about 5 years old, and doesn't have an antenna. Won't ours still work?

And what stimulus package are you referring to Crispen?

If you have Cable service, you do not have to worry about the switch over.  It's only people that use an antenna that have to worry.

We have two tv's in our home. they both work. When they no longer work, then a replacement will become a topic of discussion. If there are only hdtv's available when that happens, I suppose my options will be somewhat limited.

Drew, you're fine.  You have TV through a service.  It's only if you use your broadcast antenna.

However, HDTVs are practically the only choice now.  They're priced around where normal TVs were, bigger, thinner (not the monstrosity I have), and generally have a better picture.

I have an antenna, no cable, no dish, so I need a converter box or a new tv.  The government has a coupon program.  https://www.dtv2009.gov/

Which ran out of money almost imediately.  THE STIMULUS BILL in congress which is going to spend about 800 BILLION of our taxpayer money, this is in addtion to the 750 Billion from a couple months ago.  Has a section to provide a few hundred million to extend the coupon program.

Ash,

It is the same stimulus package that will give us a $15,000 credit to buy a house and a $7,500 credit to buy a car.

Got it. Interesting.

I never understood why they give us a credit to buy a new car. Anyone know? Is it because it is stimulating the economy? That is what I think.

The bill has a bunch of goodies in it, which in theory, hopefully, will stimulate new jobs.  I was encouraged to hear the president last night.  I disagree with his base philosophy of spending us into prosperity, but was encouraged by his talk that this was just a first step with the next step to take advantage of gains made, and eventually turning toward fiscal responsibility.

Unfortunatly, the stock market fell almost 400 points after the bill was passed...you would think that the government would notice 'hey, every time we say something, the stock market falls. lets be quiet for a while'.

Seriously. I have noticed a corillation (sp?) between the 'economic plan' press conferences and when the market tumbles.

I think 'the market' dissagrees with the basic socialistic philosophy also.

The Market may continue to fall for a bit as people simply start taking money out of it (which happens in a recession).  However, a knee jerk reaction like this should be made up quickly.
