WW5: Wolves in Space - The sequel
«

Stardate: 2209.06.17
Space, it's big. With the invention of the FLT drive and refinement of metals, space travel has become somewhat common place, and space stations are all over the galaxy. However, a more private space transport is generally rare.
This makes the B.I.G. Eggo rather unique. It's a small privately financed science vessel funded by a playboy philanthropist. Registered with the Galactic Star Accord council, the captain is the only official council presence on the ship as required by the GSA charter. Normally teaming with a large medical science team, the vessel is currently making a simple equipment run and inspection.
The day begins normally, as the captain offers a mid-day ships announcement, but it is interrupted by a bloodcurdling scream. You all run to the bridge and arrive at the same time, only to find the captain torn to shreds and the ship has dropped out of hyperspace. Several key systems have been damaged, including navigation and the security system.
With a few key presses, someone pulls up the ship's computer:
"ARAMIS is Online. I can have the navigation system repaired in about two weeks, but the ship can't go faster than sub-light till then. It appears one of the crew has been infected by the Wolf retrovirus. My detection systems are offline, so I am unable to differentiate crew members without auditory confirmation codes. My database says that the Wolf retrovirus can be killed by being ejected into space, but it will likely kill it's host as well."
With no captain left, and no where to go for a while, you have nothing to do but sit, wait, and hope you're not the next victim.

Well, this isn't good at all. I guess I should go check on the FTL drive and make sure the rest of the systems are running properly.
Hey Raistlin, can you help clean up what's left of the captain.

Hmmm, well that was not in my business model.
Laht, how long until repairs are complete and we have FTL speed again?
Bront, what kind of time are we looking at running at sub-light speed to the nearest planet?
I need to check and see how this delay is going to affect my investment. <begins crunching numbers on his wrist PDA unit as he walks off to Eleven-forward>

Well, we're 3 light years away from the nearest... anything I'm aware of. So, longer than 3 years.
Shay, you better not be serving meatloaf tonight.

Aramis is right, it's going to take about 2 weeks to get the navigation system back online. The FTL drive looks fine as does life support and all the other essential systems.

Alright, after reading through the rules, I have arrived at the following conclusions. There is only one space lycanthrope, and Lycanthropy Astrica is a non communicable disease, however, it can be detected. I've been working on my thesis for my Doctorate in this field, and I am sure I can accurately detect with over 99% probability the presense of the virus. Here is the catch; it takes 24 hours to verify the tests, and I only have enough equipment to do one at a time, and further equipment cannot be replicated with anything we have on board this ship. Now, I know comming out of the closet is tantamount to suicide, but the odds are greatly stacked against us with there only being one wolf. There is no way to build an algorithim based on voting with only one furball. So the chances are more likely that we will just end up voting off an innocent in the first day. And since no one will get spaced if we don't vote, we don't need to sacrifice anyone. Now, I don't need all of you to believe me, just the one that can protect me. The wolf knows who I am, and will likely go after me first. If he doesn't get lucky and get you first (keep your identity secret, because you can't protect both yourself and me) we have a good chance of catching him before its too late. He will probably vote for SOMEONE, and I will counter his vote by voting for someone else, thus creating a deadlock, and noone gets spaced. As the janitor, in the last few hours I have been collecting DNA samples from the restrooms, kitchen, and private quarters from everyone, I will check for the virus on whoever votes first, assuming that you are the wolf. If the wolf is smart he wont vote either, thus making my job harder and I will have to pick someone at random. Thus, its in our mutual best interest to stick together and not vote innocents off until I can verify who the wolf is. Thats the best I can come up with, unless someone else has a better idea...
p.s. I'm comming for ya wolfman. You will not escape me THIS time. The scientific community will see that I am NOT crazy, and you DO exist. Your days are numbered you beast!

<mumbles something> Oh, what? Well yes, I said easy, I did not say it would be problem free. And besides, the janitor came with the ship, I did not have a choice in the matter, not that I care that the janitor seems to have the same personality issues as the old 20th century conspiracy theorists.
2 weeks and 3 years you say, bummer. Well, who was the last person to see the captian alive?

No, the wolf is out to get all of us, now when are you going to get this mess cleaned up? Can't you see it is disturbing our nurse?

Hmmm, well it seems to me that is still does not fit quite right, perhaps we could arrange some time this evening and I could help you get a proper fit <winks and flashes a brilliantly white and clean smile>

*looks up and blushes* The help would be appreciated. This thing is just so uncomfortable. I can't tell much from looking at the pile that used to be the cap'n except that the wolf is big. Very big.
Raistlin, you may clean up our cap'n now.

Well then Wulf, let's meet a little later and I can help you start fresh at getting that uniform to fit.
As for the captian, Raist will you get this taken care of please?
Do we have any evidence or indication at all of who might be the wolf? If not then I suggest we draw names to see who we space first. <gets out a pad of paper and begins writing names and putting them into a hat>

<stops writing and looks up> Actually I have a better idea, what if we were to 'pair off' for the night. That way both parties would have an alibi (sp?). And if one person is killed, well then we have a prime suspect and someone to investigate and space.

Well, my test for the first day came back 90% positive that Shay21 has the wolf retrovirus. I was hoping for higher results, but I guess that is the best I can do with a sucky computer. That was good going for Tim the first night. That would have totaly threw me off. So I vote for
Shay21
And if she got lucky and Tim was the protector/marine, I'll be dead by tomarrow night, and you all will know I was right. Good luck everybody. I'm going to go clean up the mess now. all of my swifer-bots seem to be on the fritz now.

Raist, I don't know who this Tim is your claiming I "went for". Our poor engineer, Lathlander is dead! And because of you we just sat around doing nothing. Does this have something to do with your conspiracy theory? Maybe if the real scientist would show himself we can get some answers. What I want to know is when you test the next person, are they going to be the wolf too? I bet it's you who is the wolf and this is how your getting rid of everyone. I vote for
Raistlin
as he seems the most likely to be the wolf!
